What were they thinking?
Sometimes you really wonder what people were thinking when they set up their will, trust, or other part of their plan. If you run across a crazy will, trust or other related story that you think needs to be told, e-mail it to us with a citation so we can verify it, and we’ll add it to our list!

Anna Nicole Smith, Guess? and TrimSpa model.
While she had earned millions of dollars from her modeling career, she received multiple millions of dollars from her deceased husband’s estate (he was in his 90s when they were married). She later created a will (but no trust), which stated that her son was to receive all of her assets, and her spouse and any other children were specifically excluded. Her son died about six months before she did, and she had a baby girl about two months before she died. So basically her will stated that no one was to receive her money.
Leona Helmsley, the “Queen of Mean”.
She was a billionaire with hotel holdings and other assets. Her will set up a $12 million trust fund for her dog, Trouble. The will also required two of her four grandchildren to visit their father’s (her son’s) grave at lest once each year, or lose the $5 million gift. She disinherited her other two grandchildren. Her grandchildren challenged the will, and eventually settled with the estate. Trouble only received $2.1 million, the disinherited grandchildren received $6 million, and the rest went to the attorneys and other costs. This was a good example of why a will is not the best vehicle to secure your plan.
The Dogs Have It.
In April 2007, a 30 year old single man in Kentucky died without a will. Most of his assets were passed on to his heirs without a great deal of trouble. However, his father, ex-stepmother, fiancée and other relatives fought bitterly over who would receive custody over the man’s dog, a golden retriever. The Probate Court appointed an attorney to represent the dog’s interests. Eventually the father and ex-stepmother split custody of the dog.
